Disney World’s Genie+ Changes: Pricing and Strategy

Planning a trip to Walt Disney World has changed significantly in recent months. If you are looking for the “Genie+” service, stop searching. As of July 24, 2024, Disney officially retired the Genie+ name and branding. The paid line-skipping system is now called Lightning Lane Multi Pass.

While the goal remains the same—skipping the standby line to save time—the mechanics have shifted back toward a system that allows advance planning. This guide breaks down exactly how the new system works, what it costs, and the specific strategies you need to use to get on the most popular rides like Slinky Dog Dash and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

From Genie+ to Lightning Lane Multi Pass

The confusion for many guests stems from the name change. Here is the new terminology you will see in the My Disney Experience app:

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass: This is the direct replacement for Genie+. You pay a base fee for the day, which allows you to book return times for multiple attractions.
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass: This replaces “Individual Lightning Lane.” These are separate, à la carte purchases for the absolute biggest rides in each park, such as Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance or Avatar Flight of Passage.

The biggest operational change is that you no longer have to wake up at 7:00 AM on the day of your park visit to make your first selection. You can now book rides days, or even a week, in advance.

The New Advance Booking Windows

Disney has reintroduced an advantage for staying at their hotels. Your booking window depends entirely on where you are sleeping.

Disney Resort Hotel Guests

Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, and Shades of Green can purchase passes and make ride selections 7 days prior to their check-in date.

The massive advantage here is the “length of stay” benefit. You can book Lightning Lanes for your entire trip (up to 14 days) on that single day. This means if you check in on a Sunday, you can book your rides for the following Friday before regular ticket holders even have access.

All Other Guests

If you are staying off-property or are a local Annual Passholder, you can purchase passes and make selections 3 days in advance of your park visit.

Unlike resort guests, you cannot book for your whole trip at once. You must log in 3 days before each day you plan to visit a park.

Current Pricing Models

Pricing remains dynamic. It fluctuates based on the date, the specific park, and anticipated crowd levels. You can view prices in the My Disney Experience app before you purchase.

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass: Prices typically range from $15 to $35 per person, per day. Magic Kingdom is usually the most expensive option (often around $27-$29), while Disney’s Animal Kingdom is usually the cheapest (often around $16-$18).
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass: These individual rides usually cost between $10 and $25 per rider. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT often sits at the higher end of that spectrum.

Understanding the Tier System

To prevent everyone from booking the three best rides immediately, Disney uses a tier system at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Hollywood Studios. Disney’s Animal Kingdom does not use tiers.

When you make your initial 3 advance selections, you are restricted by these groups:

How the Groups Work

You may select up to one experience from a distinct “Group 1” list. You then select your remaining two experiences from “Group 2” (or you can choose all three from Group 2).

Magic Kingdom Examples:

  • Group 1: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
  • Group 2: Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and many others.

Hollywood Studios Examples:

  • Group 1: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Slinky Dog Dash.
  • Group 2: Toy Story Mania!, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Star Tours.

EPCOT Examples:

  • Group 1: Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Soarin’ Around the World.
  • Group 2: Mission: SPACE, Spaceship Earth, The Seas with Nemo & Friends.

Strategy: How to Maximize the System

Since you arrive at the park with three rides already booked, your strategy shifts to how you manage the rest of your day.

1. The “Modify” Technique

This is the most powerful tool in the app. Once you have booked a ride, you can “modify” it to a different time or a different park (if you have Park Hopper) without cancelling it first.

If you have a Slinky Dog Dash reservation for 6:00 PM but want to ride earlier, keep refreshing the app. If a 2:00 PM slot pops up, hit “Modify” to grab it. This secures the better time without losing your original reservation if the new one disappears before you click confirm.

2. Unlock the Fourth FastPass

Once you scan into your first ride of the day, you immediately become eligible to book a fourth ride. This applies even if your other two pre-booked rides are scheduled for later in the evening.

The Strategy: Book your first Tier 1 ride for as early in the morning as possible. As soon as you tap your MagicBand at that attraction, open your app while walking through the queue and book your next available tier.

3. Focus on Hard-to-Get Rides First

When your booking window opens (7 days or 3 days out), priority is everything. Book these specific attractions first, as they sell out the fastest:

  • Magic Kingdom: Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
  • Hollywood Studios: Slinky Dog Dash.
  • EPCOT: Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.

If you are staying at a Disney Resort, book the hardest rides for the end of your trip first. Since off-property guests can only book 3 days out, the inventory for day 6 or 7 of your trip will be wide open for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy Lightning Lane Multi Pass for just one park?

Yes. Unlike the old Genie+ system which eventually offered a “multiple parks” option, the new system requires you to select a specific park for your initial purchase. However, if you have a Park Hopper ticket, you can book rides at a second park once you have used your first pass of the day.

What happens if I want to ride TRON Lightcycle / Run?

TRON is not included in the Multi Pass bundle. It is a Lightning Lane Single Pass. You must pay a separate fee for this specific ride, or try to join the free Virtual Queue at 7:00 AM or 1:00 PM.

Do I have to pay for Lightning Lane to ride attractions?

No. Every attraction still offers a free “standby” line (or virtual queue for select new rides). The paid service is optional and simply reduces your wait time.

Is the price cheaper for children?

No. The price for Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass is the same for all guests ages 3 and up. Guests under 3 do not need a ticket or a Lightning Lane pass; they can ride with you for free.
